Kerala Launches Township Project for Wayanad Landslide Survivors Amid Dispute Over Centre's Aid

In a proactive step toward rebuilding Wayanad, Kerala has unveiled plans for two model townships designed to provide permanent homes to those displaced by the catastrophic landslides that struck the region in July 2024. The initiative, announced by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, is seen as a crucial effort to restore stability to the affected communities in the district.

The devastating landslides claimed over 200 lives and left hundreds of families homeless. In response, the Kerala government has decided to build townships in Kalpetta and Kottappady, offering survivors not just shelter, but a sense of community. The townships will include essential facilities like schools, healthcare centers, and markets, all designed with the safety of residents in mind.

The new homes will be provided to survivors free of charge, with land ownership remaining intact for those originally displaced. The government has also made it clear that these properties cannot be resold, ensuring long-term security for the residents. Chief Minister Vijayan stated that the final list of beneficiaries will be finalized by January 25, 2025.

However, the announcement comes amid a continuing dispute between the Kerala state government and the Centre regarding financial assistance for the victims of the landslide. While Kerala has been vocal about its dissatisfaction with the aid provided so far, it continues to push for more comprehensive support to fully address the needs of the affected families.

As the state moves forward with its reconstruction plans, the focus is on creating a sustainable and safe environment for the survivors. By addressing both immediate needs and long-term security, Kerala aims to ensure that the people of Wayanad can rebuild their lives with dignity and hope for the future.
