For the first time in 46 years, Holi was celebrated at Sambhal's Kartikeya Mahadev
Historic Holi Celebrations Return to Sambhal’s Kartikeya Mahadev Temple After 46 Years
The ancient walls of Kartikeya Mahadev Temple echoed with laughter, devotional songs, and the joyful splashing of colors as Sambhal witnessed a historic moment—the return of Holi celebrations after 46 long years. For nearly five decades, the festival had been absent from this sacred space, its vibrant traditions preserved only in the memories of the town’s elders. This year, however, the temple gates opened wide to welcome back the festival in a grand revival that brought together generations of devotees.
The last Holi celebrated here was in 1978, before local disputes and administrative challenges led to the discontinuation of the festivities. Over the years, attempts to revive the tradition were met with hesitation, but persistent efforts by community leaders and temple authorities finally bore fruit. With the blessings of local officials and the cooperation of residents, the ban was lifted, paving the way for a celebration that many thought they would never see again.
As dawn broke on Holi morning, priests performed special prayers to Lord Kartikeya, invoking blessings for peace and prosperity. The rituals followed a solemn Holika Dahan ceremony the night before, where a towering bonfire lit up the sky, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. For the older devotees, the sight was deeply emotional. "We grew up hearing stories of how magical Holi used to be here," said Ram Kishan, 65, his voice trembling with emotion. "Today, we’ve brought those stories back to life."
The festival also became a testament to Sambhal’s enduring spirit of unity. Residents from all walks of life—regardless of faith—joined in the celebrations, sharing sweets, colors, and laughter. Muslim families, who have long lived in harmony with their Hindu neighbors, welcomed the revival, with many participating enthusiastically. "Holi is a festival of joy, and joy knows no religion," said Farid Ahmed, a local shopkeeper who distributed gulal to children playing nearby.
As the sun set and the last traces of color faded from the temple courtyard, there was a shared sense of fulfillment among the crowd. The return of Holi to Kartikeya Mahadev Temple was more than just a revival of tradition—it was a rekindling of community spirit, a reminder of the ties that bind Sambhal together. For the younger generation, it was the beginning of a new chapter; for the elders, it was the return of a cherished memory. And for everyone present, it was proof that some traditions, no matter how long interrupted, are worth bringing back to life.
