SP Leader Abdullah Azam Khan Released from Jail After 18 Months, Supporters Celebrate

In an emotional moment for supporters of the Samajwadi Party (SP), senior leader Abdullah Azam Khan walked out of Sitapur Jail on Thursday after spending nearly one and a half years behind bars. The 34-year-old politician, son of veteran SP leader Azam Khan, was greeted by cheering crowds as he stepped outside the prison gates, marking the end of a long legal battle.

Abdullah had been lodged in jail since May 2022 in connection with multiple cases, including allegations of illegal construction and land grabbing. His release comes after the Allahabad High Court granted him bail in the final pending case against him. Supporters, who had gathered outside the jail since morning, erupted in joy as he emerged, waving the SP flag and chanting slogans in his favor.

"Justice has finally prevailed," said Abdullah, addressing the media shortly after his release. "The past 18 months have been challenging, but my faith in the judiciary and the people's support kept me strong." He thanked his legal team, party workers, and family—especially his father, Azam Khan, who himself was recently released after two years in jail—for standing by him during the ordeal.

The young leader’s imprisonment had been a contentious issue in Uttar Pradesh politics, with the SP alleging political vendetta by the ruling BJP government. "Abdullah’s release proves that truth cannot be suppressed forever," said SP chief Akhilesh Yadav in a tweet, calling it a "victory of democracy."

However, BJP leaders maintained that the law had taken its course. "The court has granted bail based on merits. There was no political interference," said Rampur BJP spokesperson Alok Sharma.

As Abdullah headed home to Rampur, supporters lined the streets, showering his car with rose petals. His return is expected to galvanize the SP cadre ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, particularly in western UP where the Khan family holds significant influence.

For now, the focus remains on his reunion with family. "No prison can break our spirits," said Abdullah’s mother, Tanzeen Fatima, tears in her eyes. "Today, our wait ends."
