PM Modi Arrives in Marseille, Honors Veer Savarkar's Legacy During France Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a warm welcome in the historic French port city of Marseille today, where he paid tribute to Indian revolutionary Vinayak Damodar Savarkar during his two-day diplomatic visit. The Prime Minister, who is set to meet French President Emmanuel Macron for bilateral talks, took a moment to reflect on Savarkar's courage and contributions to India's freedom struggle.  

Addressing a gathering of Indian diaspora members at a community event, PM Modi highlighted how Savarkar's imprisonment in the early 20th century at the nearby Cellular Jail in Andaman had strengthened his resolve against colonial rule. "Veer Savarkar's fearlessness in the face of oppression continues to inspire generations," he said. "His writings and sacrifices remind us that true patriotism means unwavering dedication to one's nation."  

The mention of Savarkar, a polarizing yet influential figure in Indian history, drew applause from the audience, which included French officials, business leaders, and members of the local Indian community. Many waved the tricolor as PM Modi spoke about India's growing global stature under his leadership.  

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister visited the Old Port of Marseille, a symbolic location that once served as a gateway for trade between India and Europe. He noted the historical ties between the two nations and emphasized the importance of strengthening economic and strategic partnerships in today's world.  

Political analysts suggest that PM Modi's reference to Savarkar may also carry domestic significance, as the freedom fighter remains a revered icon among right-wing groups in India. However, the Prime Minister's speech primarily focused on Indo-French relations, touching upon defense collaborations, renewable energy initiatives, and cultural exchanges.  

As the visit continues, PM Modi is scheduled to meet with top French CEOs and attend a ceremonial event at the iconic Château d'If, a fortress famously associated with Alexandre Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo.  

The Indian community in Marseille expressed pride in the Prime Minister's visit, with many calling it a milestone in India-France relations. "His words about Savarkar resonated deeply with us," said Priya Deshmukh, a local business owner. "It's heartening to see our history being honored on a global stage."
