Kinnar Akhada Clarifies Expulsion of Mamta Kulkarni and Laxmi Narayan Tripathi During Mahakumbh: ‘This is Not a Bigg Boss Show’

The Kinnar Akhada, a prominent transgender spiritual group, has found itself at the center of controversy following the expulsion of former Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni and transgender rights activist Laxmi Narayan Tripathi during the ongoing Mahakumbh Mela. The decision, which has sparked widespread debate, was clarified by the Akhada’s leadership, who emphasized that their actions were rooted in tradition and discipline, not drama.

“This is not a Bigg Boss show,” said Mahamandaleshwar Laxmi Narayan, a senior leader of the Kinnar Akhada, referring to the popular reality TV series known for its controversies. “The Kinnar Akhada is a centuries-old spiritual institution with its own rules and traditions. We cannot allow anyone to disrespect or undermine our values.”

The expulsion reportedly occurred after disagreements over the conduct of Kulkarni and Tripathi during the Mahakumbh festivities. While the exact details remain unclear, sources suggest that the two were accused of prioritizing personal publicity over the Akhada’s spiritual objectives. “They were more focused on media attention than participating in the rituals and serving the community,” said a member of the Akhada.

Mamta Kulkarni, who transitioned from a Bollywood star to a spiritual seeker, has been associated with the Kinnar Akhada for several years. Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, a well-known transgender activist, has also been a vocal advocate for the rights of the transgender community within religious spaces. Both have yet to issue detailed statements about their expulsion, but supporters have criticized the Akhada’s decision as harsh and exclusionary.

The incident has ignited a broader conversation about the role of tradition versus modernity within spiritual organizations. While some have defended the Akhada’s right to uphold its values, others argue that the expulsion reflects a lack of inclusivity. “Spiritual spaces should be about unity and acceptance, not power struggles,” said social activist Priya Sharma.

The Kinnar Akhada, however, remains steadfast in its stance. “We welcome everyone who comes with sincerity and respect for our traditions. But we cannot compromise on our principles for the sake of fame or popularity,” added Mahamandaleshwar Laxmi Narayan.

As the Mahakumbh Mela continues to draw millions of devotees, the expulsion serves as a reminder of the complexities of balancing tradition with evolving societal norms. For now, the Kinnar Akhada’s message is clear: spirituality is not a stage for personal agendas, but a sacred path that demands humility and devotion.
