Mamta Kulkarni’s Appointment in Akhara Sparks Outrage Among Saints, Labeled a ‘Betrayal of Sanatan Dharma’

The appointment of former Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni to a prominent position in a leading akhara (a monastic order) has ignited a firestorm of controversy among religious leaders and saints. Many are calling the move a “betrayal of Sanatan Dharma” and questioning the decision to involve a figure with a controversial past in the spiritual and administrative affairs of the akhara.

Mamta Kulkarni, who rose to fame in the 1990s as a Bollywood star, has been appointed as an advisor to the akhara’s cultural and outreach programs. The decision was announced during a recent meeting of the akhara’s governing council, which cited her “global influence and ability to connect with the youth” as reasons for her selection.

However, the move has not sat well with many saints and religious scholars, who argue that her appointment goes against the traditions and values of Sanatan Dharma. “An akhara is a sacred institution meant for spiritual growth and the preservation of our ancient traditions. Appointing someone with no background in spirituality or religious study is disrespectful to our sant parampara (saintly tradition),” said Mahant Ramdas, a prominent seer.

Critics have also pointed to Kulkarni’s controversial past, including her alleged involvement in a high-profile drug trafficking case in 2016. Although she was never convicted, the association has raised eyebrows among devotees and religious leaders. “How can someone with such a tainted image guide the youth or represent our akhara? This is a direct insult to our faith,” said Swami Anand Giri, a vocal critic of the decision.

Supporters of the appointment, however, argue that Kulkarni’s transformation and dedication to spiritual pursuits should not be overlooked. “She has turned her life around and is deeply committed to serving society. Her past should not define her present,” said a spokesperson for the akhara.

The controversy has sparked a heated debate on social media, with hashtags like #SaveAkharaTraditions and #MamtaInAkhara trending. Many devotees have expressed their disappointment, while others have called for a reconsideration of the decision.

As the debate rages on, the akhara’s leadership has called for calm and urged critics to give Kulkarni a chance to prove herself. “We believe in the power of transformation and redemption. Let us focus on the work ahead rather than dwelling on the past,” said Mahant Hari Giri, a senior member of the akhara.

For now, the appointment remains a contentious issue, highlighting the tension between tradition and modernity in India’s spiritual landscape. As the akhara moves forward with its plans, the question remains: Can Mamta Kulkarni bridge the gap between her past and her new role, or will the controversy overshadow her efforts?
