India News Today Live: Despite DGCA's call to ‘rationalize fares,’ flight prices to Prayagraj for Mahakumbh 2025 surge up to ₹53,000

Flight Fares to Prayagraj Skyrocket Ahead of Mahakumbh 2025 Despite DGCA’s Appeal for Fair Pricing

Despite the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) urging airlines to “rationalize fares,” flight prices to Prayagraj for the Mahakumbh 2025 have surged to unprecedented levels, with some one-way tickets costing as much as ₹53,000. The exorbitant rates have sparked outrage among pilgrims and travelers planning to attend the historic religious gathering, raising concerns about affordability and accessibility.

The Mahakumbh, one of the largest spiritual gatherings in the world, is expected to draw millions of devotees to Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad) in Uttar Pradesh. However, the steep rise in airfare has left many questioning whether the event will remain inclusive for all sections of society.

“I’ve been saving for years to attend the Mahakumbh, but these flight prices are beyond my reach. It feels like only the wealthy can afford to make the journey now,” said Ramesh Kumar, a devotee from Chennai.

Airlines have attributed the surge in prices to high demand and limited seat availability. “The Mahakumbh is a once-in-a-lifetime event for many, and the demand for flights has skyrocketed. We are operating at full capacity, but the sheer volume of travelers has driven prices up,” explained a spokesperson for a leading airline.

The DGCA had earlier called on airlines to ensure fair pricing and avoid exploiting the surge in demand. However, its advisory appears to have had little impact, as fares continue to climb. “We are monitoring the situation closely and will take necessary steps to ensure passengers are not overcharged,” said a DGCA official.

Travel experts suggest that passengers explore alternative options, such as booking flights to nearby cities like Varanasi or Lucknow and traveling to Prayagraj by train or road. “While it may not be as convenient, it could save travelers a significant amount of money,” said Anjali Mehta, a travel consultant.

The Uttar Pradesh government, which is preparing to host the massive event, has also expressed concern over the fare hike. “We are working with central authorities and airlines to find a solution. The Mahakumbh is a spiritual journey for millions, and we want to ensure that no one is left behind due to high travel costs,” said a state official.

As the countdown to Mahakumbh 2025 begins, the debate over fair pricing and accessibility continues. For now, devotees and travelers are left hoping for a resolution that allows them to fulfill their spiritual aspirations without breaking the bank.
