Canada Clarifies Inquiry Findings: No Exoneration for India in Nijjar Killing

In a significant development, Canadian authorities have stated that their ongoing inquiry into the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent Sikh separatist leader, has not cleared India of alleged involvement. Nijjar, who was shot dead outside a gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, in June 2023, was a controversial figure with ties to the Khalistan movement, which advocates for an independent Sikh state.

The Canadian government’s statement comes amid heightened diplomatic tensions between India and Canada. Earlier this year, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had publicly suggested that Indian agents might have been involved in Nijjar’s killing, a claim that India vehemently denied, calling it “absurd” and “politically motivated.”

The inquiry commission, tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding Nijjar’s death, has yet to release its final report. However, a spokesperson for the commission clarified that the investigation remains ongoing and that no conclusions have been reached regarding India’s involvement. “The commission has not exonerated any party, including India, in connection with this case. The investigation is still active, and all possibilities are being explored,” the spokesperson said.

Nijjar’s killing has sparked outrage among the Sikh diaspora in Canada, with many calling for justice and transparency. Protests have been held in several Canadian cities, demanding accountability and urging the government to take a firm stance.

India, on the other hand, has maintained its position, stating that Nijjar was a wanted terrorist in India due to his alleged involvement in extremist activities. New Delhi has accused Canada of harboring individuals linked to separatist movements, a claim that has further strained bilateral relations.

The lack of definitive findings from the inquiry has left both nations in a state of diplomatic limbo. Analysts suggest that the situation underscores the complexities of international relations, particularly when dealing with sensitive issues like terrorism and sovereignty.

“This case is not just about one individual’s death; it’s about the broader implications for India-Canada relations and how both countries navigate these challenges,” said Michael Collins, a political analyst based in Ottawa.

As the inquiry continues, the families of Hardeep Singh Nijjar and the Sikh community in Canada await answers. Meanwhile, the diplomatic standoff between India and Canada shows no signs of easing, with both nations standing firm on their respective positions.

The Canadian government has assured the public that the inquiry will be thorough and impartial, emphasizing its commitment to justice and the rule of law. For now, the world watches as this high-stakes investigation unfolds, with its findings likely to have far-reaching consequences for international diplomacy.
