The BJP accused Rahul Gandhi of using Manmohan Singh's death for political gain
BJP Accuses Rahul Gandhi of Politicizing Manmohan Singh’s Death; Congress Hits Back
In a heated political row, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of leveraging the death of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh for political mileage. The BJP alleged that Gandhi’s recent statements criticizing the handling of Singh’s funeral arrangements were an attempt to stir controversy and gain sympathy.
Amit Malviya, BJP’s IT cell head, took to social media, claiming, “Rahul Gandhi has shown disrespect to Dr. Manmohan Singh by politicizing his death. His actions reflect opportunism, not reverence.” The BJP also highlighted Gandhi’s recent overseas trip, questioning his priorities during the mourning period.
Rahul Gandhi had earlier criticized the Modi government for conducting Singh’s last rites at Nigambodh Ghat instead of a dedicated state memorial site, arguing that Singh’s contributions as an economist and prime minister warranted greater recognition. He described the government’s actions as “disrespectful to a towering leader of India.”
Congress leaders were quick to counter the allegations, accusing the BJP of creating a distraction from pressing national issues. Senior Congress MP Manickam Tagore stated, “The BJP is resorting to diversion tactics instead of addressing legitimate concerns about how leaders like Dr. Manmohan Singh are remembered and honored.”
The Congress also emphasized that the Modi government’s decision regarding Singh’s funeral arrangements reflected insensitivity toward the legacy of a leader who played a pivotal role in shaping modern India. They pointed out instances where BJP leaders allegedly downplayed the contributions of opposition figures.
The exchange has reignited debates on how political parties treat the legacies of national leaders and whether such moments should remain above partisan politics. Citizens and political analysts alike have urged both sides to approach the issue with dignity and respect, emphasizing that Dr. Manmohan Singh’s life and work deserve to be remembered without controversy.
As the war of words continues, it remains to be seen whether the focus will shift from political accusations to a more respectful commemoration of the former prime minister’s lasting legacy.
