A cold wave tightens its grip on North India as temperatures plunge in Delhi NCR; IMD forecasts a significant drop in temperatures across THESE regions
A severe cold wave has tightened its grip on North India
A bone-chilling cold wave has gripped North India, sending temperatures to unprecedented lows across the region. Delhi-NCR witnessed a steep dip in temperatures, with the mercury hovering around 5°C, accompanied by dense fog that reduced visibility to mere meters, creating challenges for commuters and air travelers.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued severe cold wave warnings for several northern states, predicting a sharp drop in temperatures over the coming days. Areas in West Rajasthan are expected to experience the brunt of the cold wave, with night temperatures plunging as low as 1-2°C by December 21. Similarly, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and parts of Uttar Pradesh are also on high alert as icy winds from the Himalayan region intensify the chill.
Rajasthan's Karauli recorded one of the lowest temperatures at 1.3°C, while Hisar in Haryana reported a freezing 1.6°C. The IMD attributes the severe cold spell to northwesterly winds bringing icy air from snow-covered regions in the Himalayas. The biting cold has also led to increased heating demand, disruptions in transportation, and health advisories for vulnerable populations.
In addition to the freezing temperatures, dense fog has blanketed parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi-NCR, significantly impacting road and rail travel. Authorities have urged citizens to take precautions, including wearing layered clothing, avoiding early morning travel, and ensuring proper heating indoors.
The cold wave is expected to persist until December 23, with no immediate relief in sight. Residents are bracing for a prolonged spell of harsh weather as officials work to minimize disruptions and ensure safety across affected regions.
