Tourists Fined ₹15,000 for Harassing Deer in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve

Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) authorities imposed a hefty fine of ₹15,000 on a group of tourists caught disrupting the natural behaviour of deer inside the protected forest area. The incident, near the Theppakadu range, highlighted growing concerns about irresponsible tourism in the region.

Forest officials reported that the tourists were seen chasing deer in their vehicle and making loud noises to capture their attention for photographs. Such actions stress the animals and disturb the delicate ecosystem of the reserve.

The tourists were intercepted by patrolling forest guards and penalised under the Wildlife Protection Act, of 1972. “Wildlife reserves are sanctuaries where animals deserve peace and protection. Visitors must respect this and avoid any activities that threaten the well-being of these creatures,” said a senior forest official.

Mudumalai, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to diverse species including tigers, elephants, and leopards, attracts thousands of visitors annually. While tourism supports conservation efforts and local livelihoods, incidents like this underscore the need for stricter regulations and awareness campaigns.

Officials urged visitors to adhere to the reserve's rules and cooperate with forest staff to ensure the safety of both wildlife and tourists. Plans are underway to increase surveillance and implement more stringent monitoring to prevent similar occurrences.

This case serves as a reminder that preserving wildlife is a shared responsibility, and respecting nature is essential for sustaining its beauty and biodiversity.
