The Jiribam fire engulfs Imphal, with mobs targeting the homes of political leaders
Jiribam Blaze Spills into Imphal: Political Leaders' Homes Targeted Amid Rising Tensions
In a dramatic escalation of unrest in Manipur, the raging fire that began in Jiribam has spread into Imphal, triggering widespread chaos. Mobs, fueled by grievances and growing tensions, have turned their ire toward political figures, targeting the homes of several leaders in a string of arson attacks.
Witnesses reported that the violence erupted after a confrontation between rival groups in Jiribam escalated, drawing more protesters and spreading to the state capital. By the time security forces intervened, parts of Imphal were already ablaze, with black plumes of smoke visible across the city.
The homes of at least three political leaders were reportedly attacked, with one completely engulfed in flames. Protesters accused these leaders of inaction and partiality in addressing the deepening ethnic and social divides that have plagued the region for months.
Local residents are calling for swift action to restore order. “This isn’t just about political grievances anymore. Our entire community is suffering,” said Meera Devi, a shopkeeper in Imphal. "We need peace, but it feels like nobody is listening."
In response, the state government has imposed a curfew in Imphal and surrounding districts, while paramilitary forces have been deployed to curb the violence. Officials urged citizens to remain calm, emphasizing that efforts were underway to address the core issues fueling the unrest.
As the situation develops, many fear that without a comprehensive resolution, the cycle of violence could spiral further, leaving an already fragile state grappling with deeper scars.
