the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) are refining their strategies in the Kolhan region, which is critical
to the election outcome.
The BJP is concentrating on appealing to specific voter segments, especially women and the
Other Backward Classes (OBCs), as it aims to regain support following its defeat in Kolhan in 2019.
This region, which includes East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum, and Seraikela Kharsawan, contains
14 assembly seats, of which nine are majority tribal constituencies, traditionally a stronghold for the
JMM. Nonetheless, the BJP is making a concerted effort to attract tribal voters, leveraging high-profile
leaders such as Champai Soren, a former JMM leader who has switched to the BJP. Soren's influence
in Kolhan is significant, and his defection could disrupt the JMM's support base. Additionally, the
BJP's strategy involves enhancing its appeal to women voters, who represent an increasing percentage
of the electorate, particularly in tribal areas.
For the JMM, the primary goal is to maintain its dominance among tribal voters by leveraging its
historical ties to the region and its reputation as the protector of tribal rights. The party aims to secure
support from its strong tribal base, ensuring that its message resonates with those who have historically
depended on the JMM for their socio-political interests. Consequently, the upcoming elections will
witness fierce competition between the BJP's attempts to undermine the JMM's tribal support and
the latter's reliance on this established voter base.
Both parties recognize that Kolhan could be a decisive battleground in the elections, and their strategies
reflect the region's demographic and political significance.
