Canada Suspends Fast-Track Visa Program for Indian Students Amid Diplomatic Tensions
Canada has temporarily suspended its fast-track visa processing for Indian students due to escalating
diplomatic tensions. This pause affects the Student Direct Stream (SDS), which typically allows eligible
applicants to receive study permits in as little as 20 days.
The diplomatic rift intensified when Canada raised concerns about alleged interference by Indian intelligence
agencies and accused India of being involved in the killing of a Canadian citizen. India rejected these claims,
leading to a reduction in diplomatic staff and visa restrictions.
The suspension affects over 320,000 Indian students currently studying in Canada and raises concerns for
those planning to start their studies this winter. Educational institutions in Canada are worried about the
impact on campus diversity and the economy.
The IRCC has advised prospective students to apply early and explore alternative routes but has not indicated
when the fast-track process might resume. This situation underscores how geopolitical issues can influence
international education and migration policies, potentially impacting Canada’s attractiveness as a destination
for Indian students.
